The computer world is full of gadgets.  From items that make lives easier to those that just add to the complexity of technology, online stores can provider buyers with just about anything their hearts desire.

 

Webcams are among the most frequently purchased items for computers.  Because communication, especially between long-distance friends and family, is made so much easier by webcams, they are flying off the shelves.  Parents are able to see children that are overseas or away from home, and friends can chat almost face-to-face.  Webcams have helped millions increase communication and further relationships.  Especially for those who date online, webcams ease the potential complications of awkward first moments.  From conference calls to casual chats over coffee, webcams are becoming great solutions to gaps in distance.

Navigating the Sticky Strands of the Web

The Internet can feel like an unending series of pages; it’s easy to forget that it’s actually a bustling city with a basic infrastructure. Each web page has its own address, which is the only way to find that particular page. Most people think of a web page’s address in terms of the word or phrase that identifies a website, usually the name of the site and preferably something easy to remember. For example, you might think of shopping website Amazon.

 

However, that is not actually the page’s address. Instead, it is shorthand for the page’s true location, known as the “IP” address. This series of numbers and dots, e.g. 193.28.574.92, is how the computer identifies the page’s location. It’s easy to see why people would prefer to use another system – it would be very challenging to try to remember such a series of numbers for even one page, let alone many. Think then of the addresses people use, such as Amazon.com, as a universal code, which the Internet decodes in order to find the page.

 

Humorously enough, even the word-based shorthand of most web page address can become too cumbersome, which is why sites such as TinyURL are so popular. The site takes a bulky address and converts it into a much shorter version, prefaced by “tinyURL.” When people enter that more succinct address into their web browser, the TinyURL website converts the short version into the longer version…and then the browser converts the longer version into the IP address. Shorthand for the shorthand, a code for the code, as it were. Navigation is complicated.

Understanding IP Addresses

All devices that connect to the Internet do so via an individual IP address. IP stands for Internet Protocol. It is 4 sets of numbers with a dot between them, such as 123.4.567.890.

The IP numbers are assigned in groups so an IP address will often be indicative of the region or country where the device is connecting. This is not always factual if the device has set up proxies, meaning that they connect first through another computer elsewhere in the world.  Sometimes people will set up a number of proxies to cloak where they are located. Proxies can be transparent, anonymous, distorting or high anonymity.

If you are interested in knowing your current IP address, there are sites online that will provide it for you. WhatIsMyIPAddress.com is one such option.  This site has other capabilities as well such as tracing an email and testing your Internet connection speed. There is also information on how to hide or change your IP.  You can also enter someone else’s IP address to find out information about them.

If you have had difficulty with sending emails, a useful tool on this site is a blacklist check which will tell you if your IP has been listed by various companies as one they are blocking.

It takes getting the law involved to use an IP address to get an actual physical address of a computer, but you can get a location which can be helpful for a number of purposes.
